True Spiritual Worship
3/23 Reading Portions: Exodus 34; John 13; Proverbs 10; Ephesians 3
And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. Exodus 34:8
When Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman at the well, He told her,
“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24
Today, Moses gives us tremendous insight into God’s glory, as well as a better understanding of true, spiritual worship. Moses interceded for Israel when they worshiped a golden calf while Moses was upon Mount Sinai receiving the commandments of God. Because he was Christ-like by interceding for the people, God was pleased with Moses. Moses made a request of God:
“Please show me Your glory.” Exodus 33:18
Moses could not see God’s face; however, God said He would place Moses in the cleft of a rock and make the back of His glory pass before Moses (Ex 33:19-23). The LORD proclaimed His doubly potent name, יהוה (YHVH), as well as the mercy, grace, and justice of His holy character (Ex 34:6-7). Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth in godly fear and worshiped the eternal, almighty God.
The greatest demonstration of God’s grace, mercy, and judgment are found in Jesus Christ. When a Roman soldier pierced the side of the Lord Jesus, blood and water flowed forth as He hung from Calvary’s tree (John 19:34). Spiritually speaking, God places His redeemed in Christ’s side, the cleft of the Rock of Ages, and in doing so, proclaims the nature of His merciful grace and goodness. Cleansed from the guilt and punishment of sin by His precious blood and cleansed from the filth and power of sin by His living water, we may quickly bow in godly fear and worship Yehovah God. Intimate knowledge of the Holy One gives birth to understanding and spiritual insight. Spiritual insight produces godly fear. Fear of the LORD is not only the beginning of wisdom (Prov 9:10), it’s also the beginning of true, spiritual worship.
Through Christ our Lord, in godly fear,
We bow and worship Him;
The blood and water fount we hear
Doth cleanse our souls from sin.
